UX Trends in 2024!

By Martin Thomas, 30 November, 2023

It’s a transformative time!

More personalisation, more interaction, more Virtual Reality (VR), more augmented reality (AR) more Ai!

More mobile and app needs, more content consumed in streaming, more content creators.

So, what is on the horizon for the user and their experience?

Here are some thoughts on UX for 2024 as we end 2023.

It’s got to Respond

Not new of course! In 2024 it is crucial that sites work across the large number of devices, screen resolutions and sizes!  Each giving an efficient and engaging experience.

The multi-skilled UXer

Jobs in UX are often divided up between domain specialist knowledge experts.

The rise of Ai, faster tooling, and a need from clients to discuss the ‘whole of…’ user experience will see a drive for the UX professional to cover many bases.

Why?  Because the UX value add is in understanding complex interrelationships and complexities in the business that require a crafted solution. Individuals will capture this broad range of needs and cover all the bases to produce the integrated solution required in the modern complex business world.

The reality!

The development of User Experiences for ‘Reality’ whether augmented or virtual will continue to grow as these technologies pervade deeper into everyone’s engagement.

Speak Up!

The use of Voie in interactions is expected to continue to grow and more designs will need to accommodate how the user journey encompasses voice technologies in both input and output.

Ai to the rescue?

Ai is already delivering simple templates and wireframes.

This will only become more sophisticated.

These areas will see more helpful improvements from Ai:

  1. Prototyping – faster processes, faster interface designs, faster holding content generation.
  2. User Engagement – more personalisation of the user journey based on more sophisticated user characteristics and profile understanding.
  3. Q&A – delivery of more sophisticated wide-ranging questions and answers from Ai powered bots.
  4. Layouts – design suggestions made at rapid pace and changed instantly for selection by the UX expert.
  5. User behaviour – management of parge interactions and large datasets to help understand interactions.

So many Dimensions!

We may not have 4th or 5th dimensions yet but 3D may yet continue to rise in 2024 and see more designers trying to differentiate themselves from each other and make a marked stand out experience for the users.

Let there be Dark!

As we strive for difference, personalisation and couple that with reducing eye strain and conserving energy you can expect to see more dark screen modes and ability to switch between them.

Iterative Growth

The interactions on the web will need to change and focus with the rapidly changing expectations of the users.

The web designs will need to keep business goals firmly in view at all times – increase engagement, drive growth, gain conversion etc.

Often called ‘Growth Design’ the design must think well beyond the actual website or product and its navigation and continuously grow and change the web experience driving for a business mindset that hyper personalises the experience to achieve clear goals for user and business.

Social responsibility

Technology is in rapid advancement and consumes as well as gives.  A key trend in 2024 will be the rise of how designers help the businesses focus and grow and still ethically help us all and the environment by reducing consumption of energy and helping carbon footprints.

From Accessibility to Inclusivity

Accessibility = standards. Inclusivity = proactively understand the broad range of users and their needs.

It’s Personal

Personalization has been around for some times but 2024 is expected to see this trend continue. Tailoring the experience to a whole range of user characteristics and preferences is likely to continue.

It’s the small things that matter!

As personalization increases an accompanying trend will be MicroIntentions as designers seek to bring small interactions into play at key points for key audiences for example tracking feedback or like or status.  All designed to help personalization and increase engagement.

Summary

This is just a short summary of what is ‘going the rounds’ in terms of trend thinking for 2024.

Whatever matures its clear that User Experience (UX) design has a key part to play in the ever evolving web.
