As a manager a RAG status will be very familiar in your tracking of projects and other initiatives.
What's the status? - Red, Amber, Green.
Now with Ai RAG takes on a whole new meaning that you need to add to your management lexicon!
In the world of Ai RAG stands for:
Retrieval-Augmented Generation
and you will hear a whole lot more about this as the years progress.
The Ai Large Language Models (LLM's) have moved from the chatbot commercial space into the open source and sharing space in the last 6 months.
Now it is possible to start training a language model on your own data.
So how does the term RAG work with that?
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is a technique where the model (LLM) uses knowledge that was not part of the LLM's initial training data.
So now the model has a very specific data sources and context which will enhance its output.
This is where Ai truly starts to make a significant impact as company documents and resources can be that data source.
But what about privacy, security and exposing my data to the internet I hear you cry?
Services from providers like AWS (Amazon Web Services) and its Amazon Bedrock service provided fully managed services to access LLM's for private use.
When you use services like Amazon Bedrock you will have access to many LLM's.
These are the 'foundation models' or 'Base models'.
What is actually happening is that a 'copy' is being taken of the model for your own private use.
Then the managed sevice by a provider like AWS is going to 'secure' that model from the internet and other external linkages.
You will still be able to access the model via services that create secure connections.
Once you have the model and connectivity the opportunity opens to create digital solutions that utilise this 'private copy' and your own data sources.
So RAG and Ai will create great opportunities particularly for businesses with their own data.
RAG is starting now and will be I am sure coming to a business new you soon!
